On behalf of email providers the world over, we regret to inform you: email forwarding is dead.
(That is, automatic forwarding of all messages from an account at one provider such as Electric Embers to an account at another provider.)
Forwarding used to be a very convenient way to connect different email accounts at multiple providers, back when the internet was a simpler place (pre-2014 or so). We all came to rely on that convenience. Unfortunately, automated forwarding takes advantage of the very same characteristics of internet email (openness, trust, flexibility) that are exploited by spammers and scammers to ply their trades. That means the growing adoption of various layers of sender authentication intended to block unwanted mail also interfere with automatically forwarded mail, to the point where it is no longer a viable practice.
As an alternative to forwarding (as well as a mechanism to continue building their market dominance), Google introduced a fairly seamless workaround for connecting outside accounts known as POP Import. That tool avoids any forwarding issues by doing a “pull” from the receiving server instead of requiring a “push” from the sending server – other providers may also have implemented similar workarounds. But now, Google is decommissioning the POP Import. This change is going to force a lot of people to reconfigure their email lives and perhaps learn a new workflow.
